PathWays PA Economic Opportunity

PathWays PA began in 1978 as the Women's Association for Women's Alternatives, one of Pennsylvania's first residential programs to keep low-income, vulnerable women together with their children. It has grown to become one of the Greater Philadelphia region's foremost providers of residential and community-based services for women and their children. With offices throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania and advocacy initiatives on behalf of low-wage workers statewide, PathWays PA provides programs committed to the development of client self-sufficiency which leads to the fulfillment of our mission: To help women, teens, children and families achieve economic independence and family well-being. The VISTA member's main responsibilities will be to maintain and expand current programs while creating new programs. These responsibilities include: -Reaching underserved populations with FAFSA assistance, financial literacy and benefits programs such as low income students desiring post secondary education, veterans and the elderly.-Training for and overseeing Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites, including participating in internal and external meetings regarding VITA, undergoing IRS training as site supervisors, and managing tax site problems, aiding outreach and education about the availability of VITA and Earned Income Tax Credits. -Providing outreach regarding PathWays PA's year-round asset development opportunities, including VITA, FAFSA assistance, credit counseling, financial literacy courses, public benefits screenings, and the IDA program - Developing resources and publications in support of the growing financial services programs.

Member Duties : PathWays PA is pursuing several new opportunities to build capacity in financial education work. A VISTA member as part of any of these ventures would be key in recruiting organizations and individuals to attend the center, to create and deliver workshops at the center, and to provide data collection, tracking, and benchmarking as this new project takes off. Other potential projects include recruitment, data collection and tracking for a new incentive-based financial education program to ensure clients stay engaged and work towards long-term financial success. This project may include a research-based component involving a control group and a study group. A VISTA presence would be crucial in developing tracking and measurement materials and increasing the knowledge of existing staff around data and research methods.
