Urban Debate League (Outreach) -- St. Paul VISTA Program

The mission of the Minnesota Urban Debate League is to empower students to become engaged learners, critical thinkers, and active citizens who are effective advocates for themselves and their communities. The MNUDL serves 600 students in Minneapolis and St. Paul – 65% are students of color and are low-income. The goals of our VISTA project are to build the capacity of the Minnesota Urban Debate League to serve more students in St. Paul and ensure that they graduate from high school with a plan for post-secondary education and career success. A 2011 national peer-reviewed study of the Chicago Urban Debate League confirms that academic competitive debate makes a difference in the lives of youth: 1) Debaters vs. non-debaters are 40% more likely to graduate; this jumps to 70% for African American boys; 2) After 1 year of debate, students increase their reading comprehension by 3 grade levels; 3) After 2 years of debate students meet the ACT benchmarks for college readiness in English and Reading. High School students have 2-3 afterschool practices a week and then attend up to 14 debate tournaments during the season (September – January). Middle school students attend 5 tournaments between October and March and have practice 1-2 times per week. Students compete against other urban teams, as well as suburban and private schools. They debate about a current topic for the duration of the season and through the process they increase their reading comprehension, critical thinking skills, as well as their self-confidence. **This VISTA position is sponsored by the Saint Paul VISTA Program. Hosted in Mayor Chris Coleman's Office, the Saint Paul VISTA Program is comprised of a city-wide cohort of individuals -- placed at community organizations and schools -- dedicated to shaping the educational landscape for youth and families in Saint Paul.**
