Maxfield Magnet Elementary School - St. Paul VISTA Program

Maxfield Elementary School is located in the heart of Saint Paul and the historic Rondo Community. With a free or reduced lunch rate of 98 percent, Maxfield serves a high-need population of approximately 400 students in grades Pre-K thru 5. 97 percent are students of color, 74 percent are African American. It is one of three targeted schools within the Saint Paul Promise Neighborhood, a collaborative partnership designed after the Harlem Children's Zone. Closing the achievement gap in Saint Paul starts at schools like Maxfield Elementary. Our mission is to get students to the required level of academic standards and then ensure they exceed those standards. That happens with excellent teaching, and effective supports both in and out of the classroom; it requires a community school. The VISTA member will support this mission by: 1) implementing effective tutoring programs, 2) coordinating new and existing partnerships that help students and families to meet basic needs, support literacy and math initiatives, and 3) connect Maxfield to the broader community. The member will work closely with the Principal, staff and key community partners to ensure services are strategically aligned and coordinated. This includes recruiting, training, and supporting tutors, assisting parents with volunteer opportunities, collaborating with teachers, using data to drive decisions, and working directly with students to support their leadership opportunities. **This VISTA position is sponsored by the Saint Paul VISTA Program. Hosted in Mayor Chris Coleman's Office, the Saint Paul VISTA Program is comprised of a city-wide cohort of individuals -- placed at community organizations and schools -- dedicated to shaping the educational landscape for youth and families in Saint Paul.**
