Community Design Center -- Saint Paul VISTA Program

The Community Design Center of Minnesota is a 43 year-old non-profit organization. Our mission is to build vibrant and healthy communities through food, conservation and youth development. Our Vision is to be a leader and innovator in using food, conservation and youth development programs so that youth and community members: Have opportunity for learning, leadership, service and career connections; engage with their community and environment; and learn about and access healthy food. Our programs serve St. Paul with an emphasis on the East Side, where we have operated our gardening, cooking and conservation programs since 1996. Our Garden Corps, Conservation Corps and Nutrition Corps youth internships provide education and training opportunities for local teens to learn, work, and lead. Youth interns develop job, entrepreneurship and wellness skills, while learning about careers in food and ecology. Many youth interns have pursued higher education and/or work opportunities in the environmental fields as a result of program participation. We employ strategies through our programs that support healthy youth development and develop career pathways for low-income youth and youth of color. The Youth Apprenticeship Coordinator will help the CDC to develop work training opportunities, resources and connections for youth who participate in our internship programs. We aim to serve local teenage youth with effective, inspirational opportunities and to synchronize our green jobs youth pathways with education and work opportunities that will inspire youth and enable them to thrive in the green economy, as well as the local economy in general. **This VISTA position is sponsored by the Saint Paul VISTA Program. Hosted in Mayor Chris Coleman's Office, the Saint Paul VISTA Program is comprised of a city-wide cohort of individuals -- placed at community organizations and schools -- dedicated to shaping the educational landscape for youth and families in Saint Paul.**
