Summer Reads - Kerkhoven/Murdock/Sunberg, MN

Camp Read-a-lot is an all-day 8-week summer program of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunberg (KMS) Public Schools. KMS is located in a rural community that has children with many needs. The KMS Camp Read-a-lot’s goal is to increase children’s reading fluency. The camp has a variety of reading activities including: read to self, timed fluency reading, read to helpers, listening to reading to improve comprehension, writing stories, reading leveled readers and many more. At our camp, we also include large group activities; for example, one year our theme was “Seven Habits of a Happy Child”. Every week we talked about how to incorporate that habit into their lives and use it every day. The children were very engaged with this theme and it helped in their reading goals too! Also at KMS, we have gym, outdoor playtime, picnics, science and math. Three positions available. These positions are part of the Summer Reads program of Minnesota Literacy Council, which provides quality tutoring and literacy-focused creative enrichment to children in grades K-3 in schools, libraries and community organizations throughout the state, through the leadership of AmeriCorps VISTAs. The program aims to help low-income children improve reading and instill a love of learning, and also to provide VISTAs with hands-on experience in education and build their community leadership. http://mnliteracy.org/volunteers/vista/summer-reads-vista
