Jobs For Veterans

Swords to Plowshares' mission is to heal the wounds, to restore dignity, hope and self-sufficiency to all veterans in need, and to significantly reduce homelessness and poverty among veterans. Founded in 1974, Swords to Plowshares is a community-based not-for-profit organization that provides counseling and case management, employment and training, housing, and legal assistance to veterans in the San Francisco Bay Area. We promote and protect the rights of veterans through advocacy, public education and partnerships with local, state and national entities. Each year more than 1,400 veterans request assistance. Unemployment rates for veterans are generally higher than for the general population, and California's unemployment rate is higher (11%) than for the U.S. as a whole (9%). The unemployment rate for San Francisco County is 8.3% but for veterans it is 9.5%; similarly, for Alameda County the rates are 10.2% and 11.3% for veterans, and 10.1% and 11.2% for Contra Costa County. (Sources: California Employment Development Department, 2011 and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2010.) In order to alleviate the high unemployment rate among veterans, Swords to Plowshares has been proactive and strategic in our approach to moving veterans into jobs. We research high growth industries and with input from employers develop job-training programs that meet their needs. Additionally, we aggressively recruit recently separated veterans for both job openings and training opportunities. We have had considerable success in working with community colleges to consolidate training modules for veteran-only classes.
