American Cancer Society of PR, Inc. - Hope Lodge

The proposed project will strengthen the American Cancer Society of Puerto Rico, Inc. capacity to satisfy the special needs of the cancer patients and their families, particularly those of low income, using its volunteer network in an organized and systematic way. With the help of the AmeriCorps Vista members, the American Cancer Society of Puerto Rico, Inc. - ACSPR, Inc., will develop an infrastructure of community volunteers who will support the programs and services of the organization, and by achieving greater effectiveness and efficiency. AmeriCorps VISTA members will become liaisons between the institution and the local communities. As a result, ACSPR, Inc. will end up with a road map that will guide the process of recruiting, training and retaining community volunteers.

Member Duties : Act as a liaison between ACS/PR and the community, identify real needs that could be addressed by potential volunteers; make initial contact with them; assist in the follow-up activities for the active volunteers; help organize seminars and workshops; assist in the preparation of written material (i.e., training agendas and exercises); participate in the evaluation exercises for the developed procedures; and periodically provide written reports on activities. Recruit new volunteers and participate in their training, proposals and follow-up, and participate in fundraising activities (i.e., Relay for Life events, identification of corporate donors, presentations to potential donors, and follow-up).
