MTCC / Browning School Garden

During your time here you will work primarily with the Browning Public Schools and community groups around on the Blackfeet Reservation who are working hard to address childhood hunger through different programs and interventions. With almost 90% of children eligible for free and reduced-priced meals at the schools, hunger remains a problem that affects childrens' ability for healthy emotional and physical growth. Research shows that children who are chronically hungry are less able to pay attention in class, have lower standardized testing scores, and have more behavioral issues in school than children who are not hungry. In order to help our children succeed in school, we know they have to be well fed. The primary objectives of this VISTA project are to help us identify the scope of the hunger issue among our children and their families, assess the reach and impact of current projects, assist in improving current projects, suggest ways to fill current gaps, and determine what may ultimately help our children succeed in school. Browning is a unique place. It isn't for the faint of heart, but will welcome you warmly if you give it a good chance. If you're looking for a highly challenging and incredibly rewarding adventure- this is where you'll find it. Position location: Browning, MT
