Latinos In Action Grant Writer

Latinos In Action, LIA, is a program in which a high school, HS, class of Latino students are trained to teach reading and math to elementary Latino students. The HS students are then bussed for the rest of the year to an elementary school for one class period where they are assigned to help students who are struggling. A great bond is formed between the HS mentor/role model and the elementary student. The self esteem/self identity, confidence of the HS student is raised immeasurably and the elementary student receives a great boost in his abilities to perform, not to mention the love/respect/admiration that he or she gains for the HS student. This program is exploding in Utah and Idaho. Begun in 2000, there were 8 schools in the 2008-9 year, in 2009-10 there were 18 schools, in 2010-11 there were 39 schools, and in 2011-2 there are scheduled to be 53 high schools. Most school districts do not have the budget to support all elements of the LIA program, and need grants from LIA to pay expenses such as bussing costs, and others. We need a full time grant writer to seek funding for the schools. The grant writer will be located in Orem, Utah with Director, Jose Enriquez, and 4 other VISTA volunteers and coordinated with another grant writer located in Logan, Utah at Utah State University, USU, where he/she be able to focus on grant writing. USU has a statistics department very interested in helping the VISTA volunteer gain experience in both statistics and grant writing, but the VISTA will coordinate efforts. This VISTA grant writer will be co-located with 5 other VISTA volunteers working on other aspects of the program and will collaborate with them sharing grant resources. See also Latino Youth, Latinos In Action, Multicultural Youth, and Latino Outdoors in the Program Names. See www.latinosinaction.org and www.youthdiscovery.org for more details. We have two of 7 openings left in the 2011-2012 year.
