Vancouver Urban Forestry

The mission of Vancouver's Urban Forestry Program is to maximize the aesthetic, environmental, and economic benefits that trees provide to city residents and visitors by preserving, managing and enhancing existing trees and other vegetation and promoting the reforestation of the urban area through an active integrated program with community support and participation. The Urban Forestry program exists to help residents select the appropriate trees for planting, to provide education about proper tree care and the benefits of trees, and to protect, preserve, and restore the urban forest canopy through code enforcement, planning, and tree planting coordination. The City of Vancouver has been recognized as a Tree City USA for its efforts to preserve and enhance the urban forest. The Canopy Restoration Program, a program of Vancouver Urban Forestry (UF), was initiated in 2005 in response to a study that Vancouver’s existing tree canopy is inadequate and declining. Through the Canopy Restoration Program, UF currently coordinates the planting of over 800 trees each year; these plantings occur in parks, natural areas, street medians and in neighborhoods. The AmeriCorps member’s role will be to expand volunteer participation in tree planting efforts in neighborhoods and to ensure survival of young trees throughout the planting areas.

Member Duties : The Member will expand outreach efforts in targeted neighborhoods, coordinate tree planting projects in those neighborhoods, and ensure tree survival after planting. The Member will implement and improve an outreach strategy to inspire and engage local residents in a community tree planting effort while educating residents about the benefits of trees. Outreach efforts include giving presentations, submitting articles to newsletters, distributing flyers, canvassing targeted neighborhoods, and tabling at outreach events. The ultimate goal is to coordinate tree planting projects, in partnership with our non-profit partner Friends of Trees (www.friendsoftrees.org), in targeted neighborhoods while building a strong base of committed volunteers. The Member will assist staff in various maintenance activities, including irrigation, mulching, removing invasives, and monitoring. The work plan is 50% outreach and canvassing, 35% tree planting coordination, and 15% tree monitoring and maintenance.
