Breakthrough Twin Cities -- Saint Paul VISTA Program

Breakthrough Twin Cities helps motivated students overcome adversity to prepare for college with the support of older students passionate about education. For six weeks during the summer, motivated, under-resourced middle school students take challenging, enrichment courses designed by aspiring teachers. Professional instructional coaches guide the aspiring teachers. During the school year, middle school students participate in enrichment programming on one Saturday per month. High school students participate in quarterly Saturday sessions, monthly after-school meetings, and receive individualized college counseling services. We also provide 1-1 support to students who encounter the greatest challenges in school. The primary goal for the VISTA during the 2013-2014 year is to build Breakthrough Twin Cities’ community engagement capacity through communications, volunteerism and development. In particular, the VISTA will: 1) Refine our volunteer program, allowing our organization to expand our services in areas of greatest need – social support, math, and college essay coaching, and 2) Assist Breakthrough Twin Cities in developing a strong and adequately balanced funding stream that will contribute to organizational sustainability. The VISTA member will help to ensure that all of our students, regardless of socioeconomic conditions, have the opportunity to enroll in and be successful in college! **This VISTA position is sponsored by the Saint Paul VISTA Program. Hosted in Mayor Chris Coleman's Office, the Saint Paul VISTA Program is comprised of a city-wide cohort of individuals -- placed at community organizations and schools -- dedicated to shaping the educational landscape for youth and families in Saint Paul.**
