New Haven Education - Dwight Hall at Yale

The Dwight Hall at Yale Education Capacity Building VISTA member will be addressing three areas of need focusing on capacity building for education outreach initiatives in New Haven, CT. This will include working on a project planned by Dwight Hall to engage educators and community members in conversations around educational issues in the city and working with partners at the school to improve and expand existing programs. Some activities may include; documenting project activities, tracking volunteer engagement, evaluating impact, tracking attendance and participation, and facilitate involvement by Dwight Hall volunteer organizations. This effort supports the goal to eliminate the achievement gap, cut the dropout rate in half, and ensure that every graduating student has the academic ability and the financial resources to attend and succeed in college. The VISTA member will enhance Dwight Hall's capacity to address critical urban education challenges. A VISTA member at Dwight Hall at Yale would be a key member of an organization consisting of 6 full-time and 4 part-time staff members. The VISTA will receive close supervision and mentorship and have access to training opportunities at Yale University and workshops hosted at New Haven non-profits and foundations. Dwight Hall at Yale is one of seven community organizations taking part in the New Haven Education AmeriCorps VISTA Project, sponsored by the Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut, in order to improve the capacity of organizations to close the achievement gap by increasing access to programs which improve childhood literacy, college-readiness, and wraparound services in New Haven.
