Summer Reads - Duluth, MN

Change a child’s life this summer by joining Summer Reads, an AmeriCorps VISTA program of the Minnesota Literacy Council! While specific roles and responsibilities of individual VISTAs vary depending on site placements, Summer Reads provides high-quality literacy tutoring to low-income children in grades K-3 in schools, libraries and community organizations across the state. The Myers-Wilkins Community School Collaborative is a 6-member nonprofit dedicated to serving youth and families of Duluth’s Central and East Hillside neighborhoods. We apply the principles of a Community Schools model to program design: intentional partnerships and mobilization of key organizations and individuals, clear outcomes and high expectations, embracing diversity, building upon the strengths of our community, and creating a school community that addresses the neighborhood’s unique needs and assets. The summer programs provide exceptional enrichment experiences for children that broaden horizons while building upon and reinforcing essential academic skills such as reading, writing and real-life applications of mathematical concepts. The theme this year is “Wonders of the World and Space”. Children will study the wonders of the world and space from a scientific, historical and various cultural perspectives. Hillside Youth Theatre offers youth ages 7-15 opportunities to develop intellectual, literacy, social and life skills through an integrated academic and Performing Arts Program. Their summer will culminate in the production of their own play. COMPASS Camp will learn through art, literature, journaling, and science experiments as well as studying natural wonders of Duluth and space through field trips, hands-on projects and non-fiction reading. Imagination Station will feature daily activities focused on life-skills, gardening, neighborhood involvement, and creative projects. Reading comprehension and vocabulary development will be embedded into all of these activities.
