Summer Reads - Ely, MN (LitMN)

The mission of Ely Community Resource (ECR) is to foster positive youth development through activities designed to increase self-esteem, build a sense of community and provide positive adult relationships that allow effective interventions. Our vision is to be a primary resource to Ely area youth and to help build a community equipped to make ELY A GREAT PLACE TO GROW UP! Our team of dedicated staff works with our local school district and the City of Ely to provide school-year homework help and year-round character development programs, educational enrichment opportunities and safe recreation activities. Our Summer Reads program is supported by the school district and Ely Public Library and runs for 8 weeks, June 15 – August 9. It was created in response to needs identified by school personnel and corroborated by testing in the classroom. Many of our students do not initially come to school reading-ready. VISTAs have an opportunity to make a big difference in their school experience next year! Our immediate goal for these students is to prevent the “summer slide”; catching up now means a better life for the rest of their lives. The ECR team enjoys wonderful support from our community; being a Summer Reads VISTA is an excellent opportunity to truly be part of community life while having a positive impact on our children! Other ECR summer programs include The Children’s Garden, ECO Club, Healthy Kids Club, and Mentoring Youth. *Positions are part of Literacy Minnesota’s Summer Reads cohort, which supports youth and families all ages in breaking down barriers to education and economic security through a variety of projects, including distance learning, modified in-person learning with safety measures in place, meal distribution, helping families access resources, and more. https://www.literacymn.org/americorps-vista
