Summer Reads - Ely, MN

The mission of Ely Community Resource is to foster positive youth development through activities designed to increase self-esteem, build a sense of community and provide positive adult relationships that allow effective interventions. Our vision is to be a primary resource to Ely area youth and to help in building a community equipped to make ELY A GREAT PLACE TO GROW UP! We work with our local school district and the City of Ely to provide school-year homework help and year-round character development programs, educational enrichment opportunities and safe recreation activities. Our Summer Reads program is supported by the school district and Ely Public Library and runs for 8 weeks, June 5 – July30. It was created in response to needs identified by school personnel and corroborated by testing in the classroom. Many of this year’s students did not initially come to school reading-ready. VISTAs have an opportunity to make a big difference in their school experience next year! Our immediate goal for these students is to prevent the dreaded “summer slide”; catching up now means a better life for the rest of their lives. The ECR team enjoys wonderful support from our community; being a Summer Reads VISTA is an excellent opportunity to be part of community life while having a positive impact on our children! Other summer programs include The Children’s Garden, ECO Club, Healthy Kids Club, and Mentoring Youth. The VISTA positions are part of the Summer Reads program of Minnesota Literacy Council, which provides quality tutoring and literacy-focused creative enrichment to K-3rd graders in schools, libraries and community organizations throughout the state, through the leadership of AmeriCorps VISTAs. The program aims to help low-income children improve reading and instill a love of learning, and also to provide VISTAs with hands-on experience in education and build their community leadership. 2 positions available. http://mnliteracy.org/volunteers/vista/summer-reads-vista

Member Duties : Do you like helping others? Would you like professional experience and training that looks good on your resume? Change a child’s life this summer by joining Summer Reads - Ely. Summer Reads focuses on reducing the decline of elementary children’s literacy skills over the summer months, a phenomenon commonly referred to as the “summer slide,” through one-to-one and group tutoring. VISTAs will work with two groups of students and teachers—one group in the morning and one each afternoon. Field trips and art projects enrich the students’ learning from stories and classroom topics. As a VISTA, you will track your students’ progress. You will be an integral part of the teaching team, with input into the content of our program. Your creativity will get a workout; the experience you’ll gain will enrich your own development. Orientation takes place on June 5 in Little Falls (travel paid by Minnesota Literacy Council) and in-service trainings on select Fridays. Apply now, before April 28!
