Summer Reads - Northfield, MN

Summer PLUS provides life-changing literacy services for children in grades K-5 by providing academic and social emotional support in schools and community organizations in Northfield for 7 weeks during the summer. Our goals are to: keep at-risk students in the traditional school system; give students tools so that they can enjoy success during their schooling; target and remediate Reading, Math and Social Skills to students; and build relationships with youth so that they are more likely to be engaged with staff and peers during the regular school day. Youth attend Monday-Thursday, 9:30am-3pm (at Greenvale Park Elementary). During mornings, students are with licensed teachers for Math, Reading and Social Skills. After a free lunch, youth spend afternoons in various clubs ranging from arts and crafts to sports to literary exploration. PLUS brings in guest community speakers, participates in youth-designed community service projects, and is planning weekly trips to the city pool. Classroom teachers and/or RTI coaches refer students to the program, who must meet the state defined at-risk criteria. Daily Summer PLUS attendance typically is around 300. For most of the young people, this is their only summer enrichment activity. More than half of attendees are students of color (the vast majority of these are Latino). Each year, over three-quarters of the attendees are low-income children eligible for free-reduced school lunches. Three positions available. These positions are part of the Summer Reads program of Minnesota Literacy Council, which provides tutoring and literacy-focused enrichment to children in grades K-3 in schools, libraries and nonprofits across the state through the leadership of AmeriCorps VISTAs. The program aims to help low-income children improve reading and instill a love of learning, and also to provide VISTAs with hands-on experience in education and build their community leadership. http://mnliteracy.org/volunteers/vista/summer-reads-vista

Member Duties : Equipped with in-depth training in literacy tutoring practices, VISTAs can add their own ideas and creativity to affect a group of students. VISTAs will work one-on-one with identified youth in the morning session and have the opportunity to work with small group(s) in the afternoon. The afternoon could look like a club(s) where the VISTAs would plan literacy activities/games to implement with the youth. The VISTAs would be expected to perform activities such as planning literacy type activities/games, tutoring youth one-on-one with reading skills/techniques, and develop relationships with the students to create a welcoming environment. VISTAs serve full-time, Monday – Friday, with Minnesota Literacy Council in-service trainings on select Fridays. A required Pre-Service Orientation takes place on June 12-13 in the Twin Cities (travel paid by Minnesota Literacy Council). Apply early as there are a limited number of positions and the final deadline for consideration of April 28, 2017.
