Summer Reads - Northfield, MN (LitMN)

Summer PLUS provides life-changing literacy services for children in grades K-5 by providing academic and social emotional support in schools and community organizations in Northfield for 7 weeks during the summer. Our goals are to provide academic and social emotional support to students we serve. We do this by targeting Reading, Math, and Social Skills to students; and build relationships with youth so that they are more likely to be engaged with staff and peers during the regular school day. Youth attend Monday-Thursday, 9:30am-3pm (at a local Elementary building). During mornings, students are with licensed teachers for Reading and Math skill development. After a free lunch, youth spend afternoons in various clubs ranging from arts and crafts to sports to literary exploration. Classroom teachers and/or RTI coaches refer students to the program, who must meet the state defined at-risk criteria. Daily Summer PLUS attendance typically is around 200. For most of the young people, this is their only summer enrichment activity. More than half of attendees are students of color (the vast majority of these are Latino). Each year, about 60-70% of the attendees are low-income children eligible for free-reduced school lunches. *Positions are part of Literacy Minnesota’s Summer Reads program, which trains and places about 70 AmeriCorps VISTA members as K-5 children’s literacy mentors in schools, libraries and out-of-school-time programs. About half of members serve outside the Twin Cities metro.
