Summer Reads - Barnum, MN (LitMN)

Barnum is a small town, population 500. The school is the center of our community. The district covers 198 square miles and has 3,800 students. The nearest grocery store is over 5 miles away and the nearest large discount store is 20 miles away. Most students live in rural areas with no easy access to activities outside our community. Most parents work outside our school district and many work shifts. In fact, 29% of Barnum wage earners work outside our county and 36% of elementary students qualify for free-reduced lunches. Barnum Community Education and Bomber Club collaborate to provide quality summer programs. We utilize the elementary media center, computer labs, gyms, playground, soccer/baseball field, pavilion, lawn and schedule bi-monthly field trips. Our mission is to provide professional, quality care to meet each child’s physical, emotional, social, developmental, and educational needs. We believe by allowing the child space to grow, be themselves, enjoy their time and participate in educational activities, we can provide the best possible care. Our goal is to be the best place for children to be when they can’t be home with their parents! All aspects of the child’s development are considered. We are respectful of the culture, economic, religious, and political status of each family. We strive to keep parents actively involved and encourage parents to review program plans and participate in their child’s development. *Positions are part of Literacy Minnesota’s Summer Reads program, which trains and places about 60 AmeriCorps VISTA members as K-5 children’s literacy mentors in schools, libraries and out-of-school-time programs. About half of members serve outside the Twin Cities metro. More info: https://www.literacymn.org/americorps-vista
