Summer Reads - Aitkin, MN
Change a child’s life this summer by joining Summer Reads, an AmeriCorps VISTA program of the Minnesota Literacy Council! Aitkin/Rippleside Elementary School has a high population of students who live in poverty. Many of our students are from an environment where literacy is not a priority. Students are in need of a role model to help model a love of literacy. Students will be involved in fun, literacy-rich activities and be exposed to many different authors and genres of books. VISTAs will be able to model a love of reading and show the importance of literacy. The best way to become a “better” reader is to READ! The Summer Literacy Program at Rippleside Elementary School in Aitkin, MN, will encourage reading throughout the summer to help prevent the “summer slide” of reading skills. The Aitkin Summer Reads Program hopes to encourage reading, improve literacy skills, and foster a love of reading. VISTAs in our program would allow us to have a lower student/teacher ratio. This allows us to give students the individualized attention they so need. These positions are part of the Summer Reads program of the Minnesota Literacy Council. Summer Reads AmeriCorps VISTAs provide quality tutoring and literacy enrichment opportunities for K-3rd grade students in schools, libraries, and community organizations across the state. VISTAs work with predominantly low-income children to instill a love of learning, while developing their own professional skills through hands-on experience in education and in-service trainings with other VISTAs. Service dates are June 11 – August 5. See for more information.

Member Duties : VISTAs will partner with a cooperating teacher. They will have one group of students they work with on Monday/Tuesday and a different group on Wednesday/Thursday. They will help lead small groups in literacy activities. VISTAs are a vital part of our program as they will be a literacy role model for students that often come from situations where literacy may not be deemed important. (Activities may include leading stations, helping with book selection, reading to and with students, and helping with writing projects.) VISTA members will serve full-time, approximately 40 hours per week, primarily Monday – Friday, with Minnesota Literacy Council in-service trainings on select Fridays. Pre-Service Orientation takes place on June 11-12 in the Twin Cities (travel paid by Minnesota Literacy Council).
