Notre Dame AmeriCorps - Phoenix
We at Notre Dame Mission Volunteers AmeriCorps believe that education is the fundamental tool in the struggle for human dignity, self-esteem, and self-determination. In Phoenix we have several placements with organizations that serve the unique needs of the community. At Arizona Women's Education and Employment (AWEE) our members assist homeless individuals and struggling families reenter the work force through on site job training and work experience. The NDA member works directly with the clients and, with the help of volunteers, offers mentoring, job search and resume writing assistance, mock interviews and computer skills development. They provide the necessary referrals to ensure that their clients are placed on a path to success once they leave the program. We also have members serve with the Southwest Key Program, a shelter for unaccompanied minors, typically from Central and South America. Here the members serve to support and mentor the youth as well as assist in English as a Second Language (ESOL) classes. The children at these shelters range in age from young toddlers to High School aged students. We partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona where our members provide support to matches, lead trainings for new volunteers and families participating in the program, and oversee the partnerships between bigs and littles. Our members that serve at the Salvation Army's KROC Center in south Phoenix serve the underprivileged youth at their community center. The members here assist lead tutors and teachers in classes that introduce math, literacy and other academic concepts and culturally appropriate programs and activities.
