Washburn Univ/Rainbows United Vol Mgmt

Rainbows United, Inc. serves approximately 3,300 children and youth with special needs each year. The agencys mission is to enhance the lives of children with special needs and their families by bringing together community resources and providing customized services. The vision is bringing potential to life by elevating the uniqueness of children and their families. The agency was founded in 1972 as an education and training center for children with special needs who were denied access to public school. As the agency has matured, we have added services to help families cope with having a child with special needs and developed ways for these children and youth to become contributing members of the community. Rainbows United, Inc. is the lead agency for tiny-k early intervention for infants and toddlers with special needs, serving approximately 1,000 children each year. Rainbows United is the areas only Targeted Case Management provider specializing in children and youth to age 21. Mental Health Services are provided for children ages 0-8 years, and include Play Therapy and Mental Health Consultation in over 30 early care and education centers and family care homes. Rainbows United provides quality specialized child care for children and youth ages 0-21. These services, provided in homes and in Rainbows two centers in Sedgwick County, make it possible for parents to work. Fifty-five percent of families we serve through quality specialized child care have low- to moderate- household income. Our center-based services help alleviate poverty and improve the outlook for children and their families. Rainbows United, Inc. uses all of the available funding streams to create environments in which children are safe, have opportunities to develop social skills and interests, and interact with knowledgeable caregivers. Still, the agency needs to serve additional youth and families who have no other options for quality care.
