2014 DPI Summer VISTA Associate Program

DPI Summer Associates will be working to provide needed resources to low-income families and children. We anticipate having sites in: FOX LAKE, WAUTOMA, WESTFIELD, ADAMS-FRIENDSHIP, BAYFIELD, GREEN BAY, MADISON, MILWAUKEE, EAU CLAIRE, STEVENS POINT, SHEBOYGAN, WOODVILLE, and MARSHFIELD. VISTAs will focus on hunger awareness and summer programming with migrant education sites, school districts, and public libraries across the state in low-income communities. Both areas of focus are outlined below. VISTAs will focus on mentoring and summer learning at migrant education sites, schools and libraries. It is well documented that children who read well do better in other subjects and in all aspects of schooling and beyond. Recent literature shows that children who participate in summer programs benefit from the many literacy related activities offered, aiding significantly to their literacy development. Unfortunately children who live in poverty are much less likely to have reading material in their home or read independently for pleasure. Experts agree that children who read during the summer gain reading skills, while those who do not often slide backward. Some VISTAs will also work with middle aged kids on college access. VISTAs will focus on hunger awareness, community garden development, and nutrition education. The ability to obtain enough food for an active, healthy life is the most basic of human needs. Food insecure and low-income households struggle to achieve this and often they are the ones most likely to be hungry, undernourished, and in poor health, and the ones most in need of assistance. A high number of food insecure households in a nation means that the benefits of public and private programs for low income people are not yet reaching millions of low-income people who need it the most.
