Summer Reads Outreach Specialist (LitMN)
Literacy Minnesota shares the power of learning through education, community building and advocacy. We serve individual learners, from preschoolers to retirees. We are also a trusted advisor to others, sharing our expertise and leadership to equip partner organizations, volunteers and professionals to more effectively respond to literacy needs in our communities. We reach nearly 70,000 people and support 450 community programs each year. We conduct volunteer tutor recruitment, training and placement for literacy organizations and provide coaching in best practices, volunteer management and use of technology to Adult Basic Education programs across the state. We train and place Literacy Leader VISTAs in schools and community organizations, where they serve full-time for 12 months to develop literacy programs for children, youth, adults and families. Our Summer Reads program works to prevent the "summer slide" - the loss of learning that occurs over the summer, especially impacting children who are low-income and face significant barriers to educational resources. Our goals are to: 1) provide opportunities for children entering K-4 to sustain and improve their literacy skills and engagement with learning; 2) increase the capacity of host sites to serve children over the summer; and 3) provide VISTAs with transformative experiences in teaching/tutoring and build their community leadership skills. Approximately 76 summer VISTAs serve statewide. Literacy Minnesota fosters an organizational culture that is welcoming and inclusive to all.

Member Duties : Play a leadership role in Summer Reads! Support 74 Summer Reads members who serve as children's literacy mentors in summer schools and out-of-school-time programs across the state. Outreach Specialists serve full-time for 10 weeks in St Paul. They typically spend a portion of their time tutoring and also work side-by-side with our National Service staff to ensure the program is successful. They provide invaluable support, resources and training for Summer Reads members and play an important role in program evaluation. Through books, reading, creative enrichment and positive mentoring, members inspire a love of literacy and learning in young children. By the end of summer, children realize a story doesn’t have to stay in a book; it can be brought to life through art, theater, gardening, games, movement and more. *2 positions available.
