Summer Reads Outreach Specialist

Minnesota Literacy Council shares the power of learning through education, community building and advocacy. We serve individual learners from preschoolers to retirees. We are also a trusted advisor to others, sharing our expertise and leadership to equip partner organizations, volunteers, and professionals to more effectively respond to the literacy needs in their communities. We reach nearly 70,000 people and support approximately 450 community programs each year through these broad and united efforts. We empower adults through Adult Basic Education – including English language, GED, computers and employment readiness – and the Adult Literacy Hotline referral service. We promote distance learning tools for adults to access self-study programs. We improve children’s literacy through Summer Reads and Early Literacy and Families – which includes a preschool and parent education. We conduct volunteer tutor recruitment, training and placement for literacy organizations and provide coaching in best practices, volunteer management and use of technology to Adult Basic Education managers, teachers and volunteers across the state. We train and place year-long AmeriCorps VISTAs in schools and community organizations, where they serve full-time for 12 months to develop literacy programs for children, adults and families. Our Summer Reads program works to fight the "summer slide" - the loss of learning that occurs over the summer, especially for children who are low-income. Our goals are to: 1) help children entering K-4 sustain and improve their literacy skills and engagement with learning; 2) increase the capacity of host sites to serve children over the summer; and 3) provide VISTAs with transformative experiences in teaching/tutoring and build their community leadership skills. Approximately 78 summer VISTAs serve statewide.

Member Duties : Play a leadership role in Summer Reads! Support 76 AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates who serve as children's literacy tutors in summer schools and out-of-school-time programs across the state. Outreach Specialists serve full-time for 10 weeks. They typically spend a portion of their time tutoring and also work side-by-side with our National Service staff to ensure the summer program runs successfully. They provide invaluable support, resources, and training for VISTA tutors and play an important role in our program evaluation. Through books, reading, creative enrichment and positive mentoring, VISTAs help instill a love of literacy and learning for children in early elementary grades. By the end of summer, children realize a story doesn’t have to stay in a book; it can be brought to life through art, theater, gardening, games, and more. *2 positions. *PRIORITY given to applications BEFORE APRIL 30. www.mnliteracy.org/americorps-vista
