Summer Reads VISTA- Returning Member

Minnesota Literacy Council shares the power of learning through education, community building and advocacy. We serve individual learners from preschoolers to retirees. We are also a trusted advisor to others, sharing our expertise and leadership to equip partner organizations, volunteers and professionals to more effectively respond to the literacy needs in their communities. We reach nearly 70,000 people and support approximately 450 community programs each year through these broad and united efforts. We empower adults through Adult Basic Education – including English language, GED, computers and employment readiness – and the Adult Literacy Hotline referral service. We promote distance learning tools, e.g. LearnerWeb, for adults to access self-study programs. We improve children’s literacy through Summer Reads – a tutoring program for children in K-3 – and Early Literacy and Families – which includes a preschool (ages 3-5) and parent education. We conduct volunteer tutor recruitment, training and placement for literacy organizations and provide coaching in best practices, volunteer management and use of technology to Adult Basic Education managers, teachers and volunteers across the state. We train and place AmeriCorps VISTAs in schools and community organizations, where they serve full-time for 12 months to develop and improve literacy programs for children, adults and families. Our Summer Reads program works to fight the "summer slide" - the loss of learning that occurs over the summer, especially for children who are low-income. Our goals are to: 1) help low-income children in grades K-3 sustain and improve their literacy skills and engagement with learning; 2) increase the capacity of host sites to serve children over the summer; and 3) provide VISTAs with transformative experiences in teaching/tutoring and build their community leadership skills. Approximately 74 VISTAs are placed in schools, libraries and community organizations across the state.

Member Duties : Change a child’s life this summer with Summer Reads! VISTAs provide reading, writing and oral language practice to children in K-3 from low-income families, serving full-time (40 hrs/wk) in pairs at one or two placement sites. Under the mentoring of an on-site supervisor, VISTAs serve in a variety of program environments from tutoring to enrichment-based programs, in schools, libraries and community centers. They may use the site's curriculum or design their own lesson plans; work with children one-on-one or in small or large groups; act as a classroom assistant or lead a program themselves - depending on the site. Summer Reads is an exciting opportunity to experience direct service with children and grow as tutors and mentors. *Additional language skills, especially in Spanish, Somali, Hmong, or Karen, desired but not required. *High school diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred but not required. *PRIORITY CONSIDERATION will be given to applications received BEFORE APRIL 30.*
