Summer Reads Tutor - Returning Member
MN Literacy Council shares the power of learning through education, community building and advocacy. We serve individual learners, from preschoolers to retirees. We are also a trusted advisor to others, sharing our expertise and leadership to equip partner organizations, volunteers and professionals to more effectively respond to literacy needs in their communities. We reach nearly 70,000 people and support 450 community programs each year. We conduct volunteer tutor recruitment, training and placement for literacy organizations and provide coaching in best practices, volunteer management and use of technology to Adult Basic Education programs across the state. We train and place Literacy Leader VISTAs in schools and community organizations, where they serve full-time for 12 months to develop literacy programs for children, youth, adults and families. Our Summer Reads program works to prevent the "summer slide" - the loss of learning that occurs over the summer, especially impacting children who are low-income and face significant barriers to educational resources. Our goals are to: 1) provide opportunities for children entering K-4 to sustain and improve their literacy skills and engagement with learning; 2) increase the capacity of host sites to serve children over the summer; and 3) provide VISTAs with transformative experiences in teaching/tutoring and build their community leadership skills. Approximately 72 summer VISTAs serve statewide. MN Literacy Council fosters an organizational culture that is welcoming and inclusive to all. See our full diversity and inclusion statement here:

Member Duties : *THIS LISTING IS FOR RETURNING VISTAS WHO SERVED PREVIOUSLY WITH SUMMER READS.* VISTAs provide reading, writing and oral language practice to children in K-4, serving fulltime in pairs at 1-2 program sites. They serve in a variety of settings, from tutoring to enrichment programs. They use the site's curriculum or design their own; work 1-1 or in groups; assist a teacher or lead a program. Summer Reads is an opportunity to work with children and grow as mentors. Through books, reading, creative enrichment and mentoring, VISTAs instill a love of literacy. They distribute thousands of free books and create camp-like experiences to give summer a different feel from the school year. By the end, children realize a story doesn’t have to stay in a book; it can be brought to life through art, theater, gardening, games and more. Applications reviewed on a rolling basis until positions filled or through May 20.
