Summer Reads Mentor - Returning Member (LitMN)

Literacy Minnesota works to build a more equitable society by making quality literacy education available to all. We are a comprehensive literacy resource, providing free classes for adults and children; supporting literacy organizations through volunteer recruitment, training and teaching tools; and creating new pathways for groups and individuals to reach their full potential. Our programs and services are both local to Minnesota statewide and national. We train and place AmeriCorps VISTA members through two service opportunities: Literacy Leadership (Literacy for All & Digital Literacy) and Summer Reads. Literacy Leadership engages AmeriCorps VISTA members who serve behind-the-scenes for one year with schools and community organizations to design and carryout literacy initiatives for all ages. In Summer Reads, members serve as K-5 children’s literacy mentors with schools, libraries and out-of-school-time programs for 8 weeks over the summer, bringing literacy to life through fun and enriching activities like arts, drama, story-time, tutoring, recreation, and more. In these unprecedented times with school and daily life disrupted due to the COVID19 pandemic, especially for those living at or near poverty level, summer is a crucial time to help low-income families. Our goals are to: 1) provide opportunities for children and youth to continue learning over the summer; 2) increase the capacity of host sites to serve children, youth and families over the summer; and 3) provide AmeriCorps members with transformative experiences in education and build their community leadership skills. Approximately 70 Summer Reads members serve statewide, with about half of those in the Twin Cities metro. *Literacy Minnesota fosters an organizational culture that is welcoming and inclusive to all. Applications reviewed on a rolling basis until filled. PRIORITY given to applications BEFORE APRIL 29. Site placements made in May after members selected. www.literacymn.org/americorps-vista

Member Duties : *THIS LISTING IS FOR RETURNING MEMBERS WHO SERVED PREVIOUSLY WITH SUMMER READS.* Summer Reads Mentors serve full-time in schools, libraries and out-of-school-time programs where they mentor K-5 children in reading, writing and oral language through academic and creative enrichment activities. Depending on your site placement, you may work with individuals, small groups or classes. You may support distance learning, create content for youth/families to access on their own and/or lead in-person programming (following CDC and MN Department of Health guidelines). Each site is unique. Members may additionally work on other tasks, like food insecurity, helping parents navigate community resources, or behind-the-scenes projects. The majority of members’ time will be spent on children’s literacy programming. Service includes first week orientation and weekly in-service training. With Summer Reads, you will instill a love of literacy and break down barriers to education and economic security.
