ACCT Community Development Coordinator

The mountains of eastern Coal Country are one of America's most beautiful, yet perhaps most neglected environmental frontiers. The region continues to suffer from a legacy of unregulated coal mining, poverty, and environmental devastation. In 2002, the Appalachian Coal Country Team (ACCT) was created to address these concerns from the grassroots level. The result of a unique partnership between AmeriCorps VISTA and the Office of Surface Mining (OSM), the ACCT seeks to place full-time VISTA Volunteers in community watershed/nonprofit associations throughout Coal Country. We currently have OSM/VISTAs spread across seven states. Each OSM/VISTA seeks to increase economic opportunities for future generations, promote nature protection, perform environmental education programs that lead to higher overall academic achievement, engage seniors in meaningful service, work with community members to build community gardens and farmers markets, develop outdoor trails or water trails, fight obesity through the creation of healthy outdoor events, and become responsible professionals that continue to make a difference beyond their service year. These dedicated, passionate volunteers are powerful advocates for rural communities. In an area where past environmental degradation can create a sense of hopelessness about the future, OSM/VISTAs focus on getting people in the community involved in changing the quality of their lives, and bring renewed hope and strength to Coal Country. The results of their work reverberate deeply in the local culture as well as the regional ecosystem. There are five OSM/VISTA start dates each year (February, May, July, August, November). Please apply to this listing, even if you will not be available until a later start date. To learn more about the work we do and what it is like to be an OSM/VISTA we invite you to watch our web series here: http://www.coalcountryteam.org/pages/Appalachian-Strong.cfm
