BBC’s Sub-Site VISTA project for 2013 will be to continue our MC2 Project—Market, Café, and Community Kitchen. MC² is a comprehensive intervention designed to improve access to healthy affordable foods and promote health education. This project is designed around developing a Market, Café and Community Kitchen in the Kinsman neighborhood of Cleveland. Opened in Fall 2012, the Market, Mobile Market and Cafe now provides access to fresh and healthy food for neighborhood residents and the Community Kitchen will provide cooking demonstrations, nutrition education, and farming instruction and training. Ten new permanent jobs have been created and filled by local, low-income residents, which has provided a career pathway for unemployed residents of very poor communities. This is in alignment with Ohio CDC’s VISTA Healthy Futures objective. The VISTA will assist in key components of this project—primarily coordination of the Mobile Market and coordination of the community kitchen activities. The Mobile Market is a truck that will deliver produce for sale throughout the low income Kinsman and Central communities. By building the infrastructure and framework for both activities, the VISTA’s project will allow the organization to continue providing such needed activities through the MC2, thereby building the organization’s capacity to bring residents out of poverty and provide healthy futures, even after the VISTA’s term of service is over. These components of the project should be sustainable in two years.
