Harvest Against Hunger - Port Angeles

Harvest Against Hunger (HAH) is a program of Rotary First Harvest. Based in Seattle, the HAH program acts as a gleaning and produce recovery program incubator, working with partner host sites to place AmeriCorps VISTAs across Washington State and in a national cohort. These VISTA members serve as gleaning coordinators, building localized, sustainable produce recovery programs that grow connections between farmers and food banks to increase the amount of fresh nutritious produce available to people experiencing food insecurity. In Port Angeles, Washington, the Harvest Against Hunger project is located at the Clallam County Washington State Extension office. The Harvest VISTA will continue current gleaning and other food rescue efforts in Clallam County, continue to organize/partner with stakeholders involved in these efforts, and focus on program sustainability for the gleaning and food rescue efforts to capture fresh produce for the benefit of local food assistance programs. All produce collected is distributed through a pre-existing hunger relief network in Clallam County. The fruits and vegetables will reach people living at or below poverty levels who use food assistance programs to help supplement their diets with nutritionally dense produce, while educating and improving their access to healthy food. Are you interested in hunger relief, food waste, sustainable agriculture, nutrition, or public health? Want to build your skills as a community organizer and leader by creating community buy-in and strengthening relationships between food banks and farmers? Interested in capacity building and program sustainability? Come join a network of committed AmeriCorps VISTA to increase the healthy food accessible to food insecure populations.

Member Duties : The Harvest VISTA will streamline and finesse the program model for produce recovery. As part of this plan the Harvest VISTA will actively recruit program participants using a three-pronged approach: Continue to refine a sustainable approach for volunteer recruitment and management (consult RFH Resource Guide for best practices); Implement grower outreach plan to introduce gleaning program and solicit support from farmers and gardeners; Continue to partner with other local and regional hunger relief efforts. Within this three-pronged approach, the Harvest VISTA will continue the work started by the 1st and 2nd year VISTAs on a mechanism to track gleaning and volunteer data and communicate with produce recovery partners. The VISTA will implement gleaning coordination and oversee program logistics. The VISTA will also develop a sustainability plan for the gleaning program.
