The AmeriCorps VISTA Member at University of Florida, Center for Leadership and Service will engage and strengthen the campus community through service to the low-income Gainesville community. The Center For Leadership and Service focuses on the areas of advocacy, community engagement, mentoring, and student development in order to engage UF students in achieving lasting solutions to area poverty. VISTA members will work to establish a sustainable system for identifying, coordinating and improving community engagement partnerships between the University of Florida and the Gainesville community, related to the alleviation of poverty, specifically in the areas of hunger and homelessness. Primarily, the VISTA member coordinate three National Days of Service, two volunteer organization fairs, and the 'Service in the Swamp' initiative, which provides on-going service opportunities for UF students to impact poverty-related community needs.

Member Duties : VISTA member will partner with Alachua County Public Schools to increase the number of mentors in order to support expansion of the program to more schools in area low income communities; Provide support for the College Access program participants;Create co-curricular on-line training modules for parents and families on topics related to student preparedness and college access; Develop on-line training modules and resources related to specific academic topics for mentors; Identify needs in the community related to hunger and homelessness and assess which community agencies, UF departments, programs or student organizations are working to address those needs; Create assessment tools and tracking measures; Serve on the Center for Leadership and Service Team to create the vision, direction, and strategic plan for the integration of leadership and service to provide enhanced partnerships between area low-income individuals and the school community.
