College Health Corps VISTA, Metro State Dental Clinic (MNCC)

Metropolitan State University was founded in 1971 to serve the educational needs for working adults in the St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota metropolitan area. The University is committed to provide exceptional student experiences while partnering with, serving and meeting the needs of the community. The Advanced Dental Therapy Program is part of the College of Health, Community and Professional Studies, and the first program in the nation to offer a degree in advanced dental therapy. The mission of the Master of Science in Advanced Dental Therapy program is to improve the oral health of underserved populations by providing high quality, patient-centered care. The goals include educating students to increase the dental workforce in Minnesota, provide oral health services to underserved populations, promote the well being of underserved communities, provide educational experiences for students and develop and foster leadership within dental public health. The program establishes partnerships with community organizations serving the underserved who can offer these experiences to students to augment their on-campus experiences.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will assist with developing a plan to recruit, screen, interview and hire dental clinicians (assistants, hygienists, dental therapists and dentists) to volunteer in the university clinic to expand capacity for delivery of dental care. Also, supporting the recruitment of Advanced Dental Therapy students, the VISTA will assist with production of materials, such as photos, videos and information distribution via the Internet and social networking sites. Another component of VISTA activities will be oral health education delivery at community sites. The steps will entail community research, development of a strategy to recruit participants, then delivery of information. The goals of these activities are to provide more education and prevention strategies regarding oral health before problems arise. Interviews will occur on a rolling basis and preference will be given to candidates who apply before April 12. Candidates must also email a resume and cover letter.
