Ketchikan Youth Initiative: Youth Entrepreneurship

The vision of the Ketchikan Youth Initiative's Youth Entrepreneurship program is to celebrate that a larger number of youth are engaged in business enterprises and activities that contribute to the economic development and well-being of the community. This is a multi-year program. In the first year we expect the VISTA to be involved in the following activities: 1)complete research about successful models of incubators for youth entrepreneurship and establish a business plan for the KYI hub; 2)raise $25,000 to cover start-up operating costs and seed money for a pilot program; 3) enhance KYI's civic engagement program that provides essentials skills and experiential learning for youth. KYI was formed five years ago after the unfortunate death of two teens due to misuse of prescription drugs. Our community is plagued with problems of alcohol, drugs, suicides, drop-outs, teen pregnancies... We are committed to supporting the youth and young adults of our community to take the lead in creating solutions to these problems and mentoring them to achieve their desired outcomes. KYI is committed to providing youth-directed and adult-mentored programs and activities. We serve ages 14 to 24 and focus on those who are disadvantaged. We first established a paintball field, are now supporting the development of a skatepark, provide a "teen drop-in" program at a local cafe, and are redeveloping an 100 yr old warehouse into a two-story Youth Community Center, a badly needed addition to our community. In all of these endeavors, youth have an opportunity to step forward as leaders. Our Board is governed by Youth Officers under 18, each supported by an adult adviser. Over 600 volunteer hours have been contributed to the Youth Center building project in the past six months. This VISTA position will hit the ground running with some existing programming in place, ready to be enhanced and improved and will have primary responsibility to develop the entrepreneurial hub.
