Coal Heritage Highway Authority

The Coal Heritage Highway Authority is the Umbrella Sponsor for up to 35 VISTA sites in southern West Virginia. This region has gone from exceedingly prosperous in the coal boom of the early 20th century, to severe economic depression in the latter part of the century and into the present. All programs work to alleviate the effects of poverty. Some sites focuses are: drug abuse recovery, home weatherization, after school programs, long term flood recovery, non-profit capacity building, wastewater management, economic development, etc. The CHHA itself works to tell the story of coal in southern WV and promotes heritage tourism and historic preservation as economic development tools.
