UCAN-Learning Garden Program Coordinator w/ Woolley Center

The goals of the UCAN VISTA Coalition are to 1) increase awareness of the local poverty needs in Josephine, Jackson, Douglas, and Coos counties and engage community members in helping find solutions to meet those needs. 2) Provide positive service opportunities for those who serve with our coalition and 3) engender an ethic of service among the residents of the communities we serve. VISTA members serving with the coalition will serve to mobilize community volunteers of all ages, develop collaborative partnerships, increase funding for anti-poverty programs, generate in-kind donations, increase awareness of resources available to help meet basic needs, develop new educational programs, and coordinate community economic development initiatives. This specific position places you at the Umpqua Community College-Woolley Center. The Woolley Center houses adult high school diploma and Pre-GED/GED programs for the residents of Douglas County. High school credit recovery students attend course sessions throughout the day in block classes. Students must complete the Oregon approved diploma requirements, in addition to achieving adult basic skills learning standards. The program is known for small class size, dedicated instructors, and innovative instruction. The program is seeking to further develop a community garden that supports the Woolley Center to provide a hands-on laboratory for students at Woolley Center to practice science and math skills, as well as to engage in service-learning by producing food for the UCC CANS program, which is a campus-based food bank that helps UCC students in need. Oregon also has a draft of environmental literacy standards for high school students; the community garden will assist our program in integrating these standards into our curriculum. The garden project will also support student engagement through hands-on instruction
