Literacy*Americorps-Washington DC

D.C. LEARNs, Washington D.C.'s literacy coalition, is accepting applications for AmeriCorps Member positions for the 2009-2010 service year, which begins in September 2009. This is a terrific opportunity for adults of all ages and backgrounds who have a passion for volunteer service and education. Members are placed in non-profits in the Washington, D.C. area to teach and tutor adults in basic literacy skills and English as a Second Language, assist with volunteer recruitment and training, and provide program and administrative support. It may be surprising, but many Washington, D.C. residents lack the literacy skills they need to get a good job, take part in civic affairs, read to their children, or access information about their health, safety or legal rights. D.C. LEARNs works with adult and family literacy programs here in the District to raise public awareness of literacy issues, recruit volunteers, provide outreach to new learners, and provide the materials, research, training, and technical assistance needed to raise the quality of literacy services available in the District. What is unique about our Literacy*AmeriCorps program is that it is tightly integrated with D.C. LEARNs' other services. Most significantly, we provide our Literacy*AmeriCorps members with comprehensive training on core teaching skills provided through our Adult Education Professional Development Center (http://www.dclearns.org/aepdc). This year should prove to be an exciting year here in our nation's capital. It will be a unique opportunity to live and serve in a fascinating city at a remarkable time. During the 11 months of service, AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance -- up to $11,400 -- payable in bi-weekly allotments. Members also receive an education award of $4,725 from the Corporation for National and Community Service upon completing 1700 hours of service. Health insurance and student loan deferment are also available.
