Harvest Against Hunger - Bremerton
This AmeriCorps VISTA position in Bremerton will work with Kitsap Harvest to connect key community stakeholders and the healthy eating initiative 5210 Kitsap to a countywide gleaning program. The VISTA will work on programming that serves to increase access of healthy produce to people in need. The VISTA member will work with wide group or community partners to develop a gleaning and produce recovery project and spearhead increased volunteer efforts for the project. The VISTA member will be part of Kitsap Public Health Department's (KPHD) Chronic Disease Prevention team, and will attend team meetings, functions and be included in KPHD's offered trainings. Other important community partners will be involved with this initiative, like the Bremerton Farmers Market, Suquamish Tribe, Bainbridge Helpline House, Bremerton Foodline, Central Kitsap Food Bank, North Kitsap Fishline, St Vincent DePaul, Salvation Army, Sharenet, South Kitsap Helpline, WSU Extension, Kitsap Fruit Club, etc. Learn about these projects and many more here: As a project of Rotary First Harvest (RFH), the Harvest Against Hunger gleaning program creates a way to enlist small to medium-sized farms to partner and connect with hunger relief efforts in local communities throughout Washington. For 30+ years, RFH has focused on connecting and collaborating between different groups (farmers, truckers, food banks and volunteers) to gather food that would otherwise go to waste. Harvest Against Hunger has been named “one of the most effective AmeriCorps programs in the nation” – and with good reason. HAH is a collaborative program that places AmeriCorps VISTA members (known as Harvest VISTA) in communities around Washington to develop gleaning and produce recovery programs to support local hunger relief groups.
