Harvest Against Hunger SA WSU Ext Clallam

The Harvest Against Hunger VISTA Summer Associate (SA) will assess current gleaning and other food rescue efforts in Clallam County, specifically the west-end, to continue to organize/partner with stakeholders involved in these efforts. The SA will streamline and further develop a system to sustain gleaning and food rescue efforts to capture fresh produce for the benefit of local food assistance programs. All produce collected is distributed through a pre-existing hunger relief network in Clallam County. These fruits and vegetables reach people living at or below poverty levels who use food assistance programs to help supplement their diets with nutritionally dense produce, while increasing their access to healthy food. The WSU Clallam County Extension Office’s Food Waste Reduction & Gleaning program gleaned over 50,000 pounds last year, sending produce that would have otherwise been wasted to Clallam County food banks and meal programs so that people living in poverty could have access to fresh local food. As a project of Rotary First Harvest (RFH), the Harvest Against Hunger (HAH) program creates a much needed way to enlist small to medium-sized farm operations in existing hunger relief efforts in local communities throughout Washington. For 30+ years, RFH has focused on connecting and collaborating between different groups (farmers, truckers, food banks and others) to gather food that would otherwise go to waste.
