Join us in transforming literacy in Newark! We’re launching a new Literacy Center in Newark in 2026 to tackle a critical challenge: 76% of Newark’s 3rd graders are not reading at grade level. Our Center will provide tutoring, family programs, and community partnerships to change that statistic—and we need passionate AmeriCorps VISTA members to help make it happen. As a Literacy Leader with AmeriCorps VISTA, you’ll play a key role in building the foundation for this transformative initiative. You’ll develop programming, strengthen partnerships and create strategies that will empower children and families for generations. Your service will directly contribute to breaking cycles of poverty through education. Why serve with us? Be part of a groundbreaking project from the start; Gain hands-on experience in program development, community engagement, and nonprofit leadership; Network with educators, community leaders, and organizations driving change; and Receive mentorship and professional development opportunities to grow your career. What we’re looking for: Passion for education and equity; Strong communication and organizational skills; and Creativity and a willingness to learn. Experience in community engagement or nonprofit work is a plus—but commitment matters most! Newark is a vibrant, diverse city with a rich cultural history and strong community spirit.
