Isuroon - Literacy Volunteer Program VISTA (LitMN)

Isuroon is a nonprofit impact organization that was founded in 2010 to offer reproductive healthcare services to Somali women. At that time, the organization was totally focused on Somali women’s reproductive healthcare needs. Since then, Isuroon has broadened its focus to include women, girls and their families’ health; social connectedness; economic self-sufficiency; and civic engagement. Minnesota has a large immigrant and refugee population that may need help with language translation, filling out forms, and navigating systemic barriers. The work done with this project will allow us to develop a literacy-focused program that expands our capacity to partner with immigrant adults and youth in achieving self-sufficiency. The Literacy Leaders will help us map assets and conduct an assessment of literacy education opportunities in our programs, research best practices for literacy programs and develop a logistical framework and trainings for the program. They will build capacity for community engagement efforts utilizing social media and community events to increase the number of program participants and promote access to Isuroon’s services and resources. At the project’s end we will have a literacy program including both in-person and virtual activities tied to our programs. START DATE 12/02!

The members will connect with local, regional, and national organizations around literacy education best practices, and develop and maintain partnerships with organizations for volunteer outreach/pipelines. Finally, they will develop a community engagement schedule, supporting documents, social media platforms, data-tracking tools, and policies and procedures in line with Isuroon's communications strategy. *Position is part of the Literacy Leadership AmeriCorps VISTA program of Literacy Minnesota (LitMN).
