VISTA For The Environment

Coastal Connection, Inc (CCinc) has a mission of protecting coastal habitats for sea turtle survival by educating and connecting people to the environment. Over the last five years, CCinc has become a leading expert for environmental protection in Indian River County. CCinc’s team is made up of a large number of community volunteers who assist with, develop, and lead environmental services all across the community at no cost. The VISTA will enhance the current volunteer program through volunteer training, communications, and appreciation to build a larger, stronger, and more impactful volunteer team. This enhancement will allow the organization to provide a greater number of environmental stewardship services including recycling, coastal cleanups, guided tours, and environmental science education that not only protects local beaches but also the Indian River Lagoon. These habitats are critical for the recovery of sea turtles, and furthermore provide jobs, recreation, tourism, food, and a natural barrier of protection against hurricanes and sea level rise for the surrounding communities. By prioritizing free access to environmental services like recycling and science education in low-income neighborhoods CCinc helps small businesses overcome the financial barriers of operating in an environmentally friendly manner, increases volunteer engagement from local community members, reduces the amount of debris that washes into the waterways, and fills knowledge gaps regarding climate change, its impact on the environment and surrounding communities, and how we think about solutions for the future.
