Literacy Minnesota - Open Door Collective (LitMN)

Literacy Minnesota is a nonprofit organization dedicated to sharing the power of learning through education, community building and advocacy. As a leading partner in the literacy field, we are building a local, regional and national movement to put life-changing learning within everyone’s reach. Literacy Minnesota operates programs for adults, children and families in MN and provides training and resources to literacy programs and partners across the state and country. The Literacy Leader will be working with the Open Door Collective (ODC) Program. The ODC believes Adult Education intersects with people in poverty and believes that literacy is a factor in helping reduce poverty, especially when done in union with other sectors such as healthcare, prison reform, digital literacy, etc. To be effective, adult education needs consistent funding, partnerships, and research identifying best practices and relevant outcomes. The ODC needs strong membership to advocate effectively for policy change and funding to reduce poverty and economic inequality and increase civic engagement and participation in society. The ODC’s nationwide membership is comprised almost entirely of volunteers who dedicate time to the cause. The ODC's vision is strong, and now needs organization and resources to carry out the mission. The Literacy Leader will help increase membership, identify partners in other sectors, and increase communications/public relations to aid in this endeavor, indirectly benefitting 41.2 million US adults in need of literacy skills. The Literacy Leader will bring online research, creative thinking, and written communications skills to this project. They will be exposed to leading researchers in the field of adult education, as well as thought leaders in a variety of sectors, and will gain knowledge and appreciation for the factors that keep people in poverty, and help facilitate a movement to reduce poverty.
