Ulster Literacy Assoc. -Digital Literacy for Parents (LitMN)

Ulster Literacy Association recognizes that literacy leads to opportunity, employment and independence, and has been providing adult literacy services in Ulster County for over 40 years. We recruit, train and support volunteer tutors who work one-to-one or with small groups to provide reading, writing and English language instruction. The Literacy Leader will work with our English for Parents program to develop a Digital English for Parents program that will be offered in school districts in Ulster County. Parental involvement is crucial to a child's educational success. With increasingly digital school-based tasks, this success is contingent on parents and caregivers having appropriate digital literacy skills. According to the US Department of Education's Office of Education Technology, "Without digital literacy skills, when learners—particularly young learners—are using technology for learning at home, their families/caregivers are unable to support them and monitor their progress. They are unable to troubleshoot technical difficulties, log into learning management systems and software, and use digital tools to engage with their education by checking grades and attending information meetings" (Advancing Digital Equity for All). As adults improve their digital literacy skills to support their children's learning, they are also learning valuable skills that will improve their work, health, financial and other outcomes. We are looking for a Literacy Leader who will help us close the digital literacy gap for parents and caregivers by creating a curriculum and training that we can use with up to 200 adult literacy learners and their volunteer tutors annually. The Literacy Leader will develop skills in project management, curriculum development and community networking. If you believe in the mission of adult literacy and are interested in developing a program that will have a lasting impact, join us!

Because this is the first year of the project, the Literacy Leader will have the opportunity to help shape its development by researching existing digital literacy curricula for adult learners, networking with school representatives, developing a digital use survey and creating outreach materials for adult learners and volunteer tutors. *Position is part of the Literacy Leadership AmeriCorps VISTA program of Literacy Minnesota (LitMN).
