Peoria Housing Authority - Literacy PHA (LitMN)

Peoria Housing Authority (PHA) is the leading provider of affordable housing in Central Illinois. PHA is a key stakeholder in the housing industry in Peoria, serving more than 2,000 low-income families. PHA seeks to develop new programs to enhance the quality of life for PHA residents. Many of our residents live within one of the highest impoverished census tracks in Peoria. Children living in poverty or underserved communities are more likely to be impacted by illiteracy, food scarcity, violence and health disparities. There is a significant educational disparity between low-income and non-low-income families in Peoria. According to the Illinois School Report Card at least 50% of children in low-income families in Peoria School District 150 do not meet grade level expectations in the area of English Language Arts. PHA seeks to develop a literacy program (Literacy PHA) that will effectively identify literacy barriers among PHA families; encourage family bonding, reduce poverty, build literacy skills, and increase grade-level proficiency while enriching the community. A Literacy Leader serving with Literacy PHA will have the opportunity to grow in a collaborative environment, showcase their current skills, and gain additional skills. The Literacy Leader will have the unique opportunity to learn about Public Housing Authorities, affordable housing programs and resident services programs. Through Literacy PHA an AmeriCorps VISTA Literacy Leader with a strong passion for social responsibility will have the tools they need to thrive in community engagement, social impact, and project management.
