Summer Reads – Mobile Hope MN (LitMN)

Most people will be surprised to find out that Minnesota has 900 mobile home parks that individuals and families call home. Typically these communities are invisible and hidden away from the general population. Many of the resources that are typically available are not easily accessible to these communities. Mobile Hope offers educational programming and healthy activities on site. One of the main challenges we see in the summer months is "summer slide" with the children. Choosing to serve with Mobile Hope, you will help address this need. You will be developing relationships with a highly diverse population of students. Your investment in these students will help to bring students closer to grade level and equip them for success in the coming school year. You will learn up close what life is like in these communities by seeing and experiencing the challenges and the strengths. In addition to working with the students on literacy you will also work alongside Mobile Hope staff hosting Taco Tuesday community meals, go on community outings (swimming, library visits, plays) assisting with day camps, and much more. *Positions are part of Literacy Minnesota’s Summer Reads program, which trains and places more than 40 AmeriCorps VISTA members as literacy mentors for children (primarily K-5) in schools, libraries and out-of-school-time programs statewide. About half of members serve outside the Twin Cities metro.
