Literacy Minnesota Summer Associate – Summer Reads (LitMN)

Literacy Minnesota connects people to transformative learning, sparks innovation in literacy and mobilizes change. Our organization envisions a future where literacy eliminates injustice and strengthens communities. We work to build a more equitable society by making quality literacy education available to all. We're a comprehensive literacy resource, providing free classes; supporting literacy organizations with volunteer recruitment, training and teaching tools; and creating pathways for people to reach their goals. Our programs and services are both local to Minnesota and available nationwide. We train and place AmeriCorps members through three opportunities: Digital Navigation Corps, Literacy Leadership and Summer Reads. Digital Navigation Corps brings members into underserved communities where they directly assist adults who are building digital literacy to achieve personal and professional goals. Literacy Leadership engages members who serve behind the-scenes for one year with schools and community organizations to design and carry out literacy initiatives. In Summer Reads, members serve as literacy mentors primarily to K-5 children in schools, libraries and out-of-school-time programs for 8 weeks over the summer, bringing literacy to life through fun and enriching activities like arts, drama, story-time, tutoring, play and more. Summer is a crucial time to support low-income children and their families, especially those living at or near poverty level. Our goals are to: Provide opportunities for children to continue learning over the summer; Increase the capacity of host sites' summer programs to serve low-income children and families; and Provide AmeriCorps members with transformative experiences in education and build their community leadership skills. Literacy Minnesota fosters an organizational culture that is welcoming and inclusive to all. PRIORITY given to applications BEFORE APRIL 20. Site placements made in May AFTER members selected.

Member Duties : Summer Reads members serve full-time in the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota, where they mentor children and youth (primarily K-5) in reading, writing and oral language through both academic and creative enrichment activities. Depending on your site placement, you may work with individuals, small groups or classes. You will lead or support in-person programming, create content for youth/families to make literacy and reading activities accessible, and may support distance learning. Each site is unique. Members may additionally work on other tasks, like food insecurity, helping parents navigate community resources or behind-the-scenes projects. Children’s literacy programming will be the focus of the majority of members’ time. Service includes first week orientation and weekly in-service training. With Summer Reads, you will instill a love of literacy and break down barriers to education and economic security!
