Isuroon - Isuroon Legal Center (LitMN)

Isuroon is a nonprofit impact organization that was founded in 2010 to offer reproductive healthcare services to Somali women. At the time, the organization was totally focused on Somali women’s reproductive healthcare needs. Over time, Isuroon has broadened its focus to include women, girls and their families’ health, social connectedness, economic self-sufficiency, and civic engagement. Minnesota has a large immigrant and refugee population that need help with filling out forms, language translation (when needed), and navigating systemic barriers. Isuroon Legal Center is located in Minnesota’s Twin Cities seven-county metropolitan area, which includes Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and surrounding suburbs. Many of the first-generation Somali immigrant women and refugees from Afghanistan served by this project have limited English proficiency; others are bilingual. Isuroon's Legal Center exists to fill in the gaps and barriers experienced by Somali immigrants and Afghan refugees in need of legal services. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will assist in filling in the gaps and barriers that include language and legal system illiteracy. They will gain increased experience working with immigrants/refugees, enhanced cultural competence while improving their legal knowledge. They will also receive substantial training and opportunities to observe court proceedings. Top areas of legal assistance include housing, immigration and family law.
