AAHS People-Pets-Poverty VISTA 2022

This AmeriCorps VISTA member, part of a network of VISTAs through the University of Georgia (UGA) Office of Service-Learning, will build capacity with the Athens Area Humane Society (AAHS) and partners. The position will be based in the AAHS’s new, state of the art location in Athens, GA, and AAHS programs reach individuals, agencies and clients across a 12-county area (see www.athenshumanesociety.org). The People-Pets-Poverty initiative helps address the financial burden of pet ownership and care. Through access to care and other collaborative initiatives, the program aims to increase access both to affordable pet resources and to wellness care to low-income communities. By bringing together different human-services partners, investigating best practices, identifying community assets and needs, and developing innovative solutions, this initiative helps provide low-cost or free pet food and pet care to a range of low-income families, communities and populations while also ensuring owners have access to other beneficial social programs. The AmeriCorps member will help with volunteer recruitment and management, needs assessment, program evaluation and data collection, identifying and collaborating with other potential partner agencies in the Athens area, and planning for the sustainability of operations.
