23-24 Puget Soundkeeper Alliance Outreach & Engagement

This is an AmeriCorps national service position. It is contingent on funding and open until filled. Puget Soundkeeper Alliance (Soundkeeper) is a non-profit organization formed in 1984 and based in Seattle, Washington, that aims to protect and enhance the ecological health of Puget Sound and its surrounding watersheds. Puget Soundkeeper is part of the Waterkeeper Alliance, a worldwide organization made up of over 350 waterkeepers dedicated to protecting their local bodies of water. Communities surrounding Puget Sound are in need of water pollution education and hands-on engagement activities. Our goal is to create active community members that are involved in critical water quality issues. The AmeriCorps member will help achieve this goal by engaging with the public through our volunteer/outreach and engagement events. Specifically, the member will (1) join our team driving our Stewardship, Education, and Community Science activities such as our Earth Month programs and (2) support Soundkeeper's "Lost Urban Creeks" Project, a youth-led program driving local watershed stewardship.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps member will assist Soundkeeper in planning a variety of volunteer, outreach, and educational events. For Earth Month and stewardship activities, these include cleanups, on-the-water patrols (by kayak and boat); community science activities such as microplastic and water quality monitoring, and ecosystem education. Some main tasks include coordinating volunteers, event set up/break down, data entry, or creating materials. Significant public speaking is required, and the member must be comfortable working in most weather conditions. For Lost Urban Creek Project activities, support activities may include GIS data-tagging, environmental education, water quality testing, and ecosystem restoration. Non-field activities are expected to be accomplished partially virtual (Teams, Zoom) and in-person.
