Mankato Youth Place - Youth Literacy (LitMN)

Mankato Youth Place | MY Place opened its doors in October 2018. We work hard to bring opportunities to the kids we serve and provide access to the resources they need to become successful adults. Many of our members’ demographics are similar to those the school district identifies as least likely to graduate. In 2020 and through distance learning we confirmed that many of our members are significantly below grade level. We work hard to be a space outside of school that demonstrates the importance of learning to our members. The Literacy Leader will join our team of staff, interns, volunteers and community partners to improve our members’ academic outcomes. We do this through multiple avenues, including: providing a safe place where kids can build healthy relationships with adults and have basic needs met(such as nutrition, clothing, footwear and personal hygiene); offering homework help, math and literacy games, and practice reading and writing. Our leadership values empowering team members through connecting them to mentors, future opportunities and by giving them the opportunity to try new things. We welcome all team members to provide feedback and share ideas. We ask all team members to bring a spirit of flexibility. It’s important we adapt our environment as needed to meet the needs of our members, families and team members.*Position is part of the Literacy Leadership AmeriCorps VISTA program of Literacy Minnesota (LitMN), which places members with nonprofits, public agencies and Tribal Nations across the US to build their capacity to improve literacy for children, youth, adults or families. Literacy Minnesota fosters an organizational culture that is welcoming and inclusive to all. Applications reviewed on rolling basis until filled. More info: https://literacymn.org/americorps-vista
