Isuroon - Literacy Volunteer Program VISTA (LitMN)

Isuroon was founded in 2010 to address unmet healthcare needs of Somali women, taking its name from a word meaning “a woman who cares for herself.” Since then, we’ve expanded programming to address Somali families’ economic, health and social needs. Isuroon has earned a trusted place in the community because of its cultural insight and collaborative approach to combatting gender inequality and the poverty, illness, and social isolation it perpetuates. Our vision includes developing a blueprint to help Somali families exit poverty and achieve economic self-sufficiency, building cultural bridges, addressing cultural and systemic barriers, and securing access to preventative healthcare. Literacy education is an important part of this vision. Program participants have requested more opportunities to learn literacy skills and we have not yet developed a sustainable program for people who want to volunteer with us. This project will respond to these needs by creating a literacy-focused volunteer program. Literacy is an urgent need for many Somali adults and youth. According to US Census data, over 40% of Somali adults in Minnesota have less than a high school diploma and 43% of the population 5 years and older speak English “less than very well.” We’re looking forward to using our grassroots, strength-based approach to address these challenges and build a program that addresses community needs while celebrating strengths. You will be working with a team of people committed to serving their communities; 89% of our staff are Somali or East African and come from the communities we serve. We are committed to staff development and offer regular opportunities for training to all staff. Someone who is self-motivated, passionate about community service, and dedicated to pursuing their own growth and development would be good fit for this position. *ADDITIONAL BENEFITS: Housing allowance, Access to food shelf & social services support, coaching/mentoring
