ECRL - Library Early Literacy Program Development (LitMN)

East Central Regional Library, with fourteen branches and an outreach service, serves residents in the six county region directly north of the twin cities metro. Nestled between the St. Croix River valley and Mille Lacs Lake, the area is home to natural beauty and great outdoor activities in every season. However, this area is some of the most economically challenged in the State of Minnesota, with high degrees of unemployment and poverty. In these communities, the library is a hub of activity and a community gathering place. ECRL's vision is to be an essential community resource that inspires East Central Minnesota to discover and explore possibilities to build and grow community. We strive to foster literate communities and prepare every child to be ready to learn to read. Library storytimes are one of the strategies we use towards meeting that goal. They are often some of the only opportunities for area children to begin to gain the early literacy skills which will help ensure their success in kindergarten and beyond. This project, which focuses on improving training for library staff and volunteers, will assist the library in providing this high quality learning experience for years to come. Working with ECRL management, you will have the opportunity to enact real change, use your creativity, learn about libraries and community outreach and make connections. Working with ECRL will provide you with the opportunity to work in our brand new facility with excellent technological resources. We are seeking a motivated individual who works well in a team environment and has a passion for reading. Experience with early literacy practices is a plus but we will provide training for the right individual. The communities the library serves are small towns with rural populations. Choosing this opportunity will allow you to develop leadership and project management skills, expertise in early literacy, grant writing experience and make you smile daily.
