Sand Creek Massacre Foundation Program Coordinator VISTA

The Program Coordinator VISTA position strengthens the Sand Creek Massacre Foundation (SCMF) by having the VISTA volunteer stationed at the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site (SCMNHS) and implementing the SCMF’s “on-site” goals as a support organization for the SCMNHS. One of the primary goals of the SCMF is to assist the SCMNHS in the development of its Center for Sand Creek Massacre Studies (the Center). The Center will be a repository of archives, source documents, and other materials related to the Sand Creek Massacre for use by researchers, students, tribal colleges, massacre descendants, and the general public. The Center will contribute to a greater understanding of the Sand Creek Massacre, the context in which it occurred, its multi-generational impacts on the Cheyenne and Arapaho people, including lack of generational wealth stemming from genocide, and its legacy and relevance in our contemporary world. The Center will expand on the interpretive and educational mission of the SCMNHS. The SCMNHS is located in Kiowa County, in SE Colorado and supports Kiowa’s economic activities by bringing visitors to the region to contribute to the local economy. The SCMF and SCMNHS’s goal of creating a Center for Sand Creek Massacre Studies would increase interest and drive tourism to the area, which is critical for the isolated area's economic development. By providing awareness and educational opportunities, the SCMF hopes to cultivate an understanding of the systemic racism that native populations still face today to improve equity in the community. The Foundation will bring programs to the community as well as involvement of students in the Center’s programs, including shared programs with Cheyenne and Arapaho students and descendants. The Center for SCM studies will uplift an underserved and underrepresented community, while strengthening the economic, cultural, and educational opportunities for the youth and general public.
