Refugee Education Services Coordinator

The Arizona Refugee Resettlement Program (RRP) VISTA Project’s mission is to support refugees’ effective resettlement in Arizona. Refugees face a wide variety of difficult challenges in achieving self-sufficiency. These challenges include issues such as becoming familiar with their new country, securing an affordable place to live, learning about resources available to assist them in resettlement, finding and retaining employment, acquiring a new language, and learning how to access public health and behavioral health medical services. The Refugee Emergency Services Coordinator VISTA assignment will be placed at Welcome to America Project in Tempe and will introduce on-line accelerated English, digital learning and earned admission programs to all stakeholders in the AZ refugee community while maximizing participation. The VISTA will also work with Arizona State University regarding program logistics, program evolution and program expansion. Please note: the VISTA's role will focus on capacity building with this project, not direct service.

Member Duties : English language skills and digital (computer) literacy are major barriers to refugee integration and self sufficiency, especially with regard to employment. Using capacity building tools rather than direct service, the Refugee Emergency Services Coordinator VISTA will be introducing language learning support programs to the entire refugee community and will help address a recognized concern to refugee wellbeing for newly arrived and less recently arrived refugees. Jobs, higher education, and connection to the greater Arizona community will all be made possible by improved English language skills and digital literacy. Opportunities for higher education will expand potential for refugees. This VISTA pursuit has the added advantage of impacting the entire refugee community, regardless of age, gender, language or previous schooling/computer experience.
