Stewards VISTA: Haleakala Conservancy

Poverty levels in Maui when adjusted for the cost of living are the highest in the United States. Tourism drives the economy which provides high levels of employment but incomes do not allow the majority of individuals to prosper. It has been well documented that as individuals struggle to afford the basics necessities it is hard to be concerned about the environments on a short or longer term basis. The goal is to educate, train and inspire community members, especially the youth, in how sustaining a healthy environment relates to their present and future bell being. Being a designated partner with Haleakala National Park allows the Conservancy to use the relationship as a platform to showcase roles outside of the tourist industry and how those roles compliment a healthy environment. The VISTA member will be the liaison between the Haleakala Conservancy and Haleakala National Park. A key objective of the Conservancy is to engage the community in the program thus creating ambassadors that support what the program is intended to accomplish. A strong Conservancy will ensure stronger ties between the Park and the community. The member will have the opportunity to work with an inspirational group of conservation professionals to forge new partnerships in an underserved community.
